The second morning in Liverpool was just as foggy as the first. We had two main plans for the day: a tour of Anfield Stadium and a visit to Crosby Beach. After breakfast, we made our way to the stadium.
The tour was self-guided and quite informative, with posters and videos lining the walls throughout. It also included visits to the home and visitors’ changing rooms, the team cafeteria, the Wall of Fame, and displays of the trophies the team has won over the years. At the end we got access to the field. Even as someone who isn’t a soccer fan, I found it impressive—there were moments that gave me goosebumps.
What truly makes Anfield magical is the fans. You can feel their energy and unwavering dedication to the team in every corner of the stadium. Scousers are very fun and passionate people, and their love for Liverpool FC is absolutely infectious. The message above the stadium gate is one of the most supportive, powerful, and encouraging phrases I’ve ever come across.
The second destination of the day was Crosby Beach. Famous for Antony Gormley’s Another Place, this beach features 100 life-sized iron statues spread along the sand, all gazing out toward the horizon, appearing and disappearing with the tides.
Crosby Beach stretches over 3 kilometers, and we arrived during low tide, making it feel like an endless desert. The cast-iron figures scattered across the foggy expanse gave the place an eerie, mysterious vibe, as though I had stepped straight into an English mystical thriller. It was incredibly atmospheric and left a lasting impression.
There are only few cities that manage to hook me from the very first sight, leave a lasting good aftertaste, and get a permanent place in my memory. It’s probably a mix of many factors: my expectations, state of mind, the weather, the atmosphere, the people I encountered, and more. Everything aligned perfectly for me in Liverpool. It felt like being in the right place at the right time. Of course, the combination of fog and Christmas lights played a big part in it. The city becomes truly irresistible with its sparkling decorations glowing softly under the foggy veil.
